'And by what right did England have to assert mastery over thousands upon thousands of unlettered African tribesmen?'

The above quote is from the Wikipedia: " Uganda Railway," which reports the details of the political resistance to the building of the Uganda Railway. The Liberals pronounced that the government had no right to drive a railway through a country owned by the Maasai. On the surface, one could argue that the Liberals were proved wrong. Could one expect all the development evident in East Africa today, without the Uganda Railway, some authority would assert. However, the influence of this project has been greatly underestimated and many problems Britain is facing today have a direct link to this century old project.

The losses that were encountered by the construction workers, like the Kedong Massacre, the Nandi resistance and the grisly killing by the Tsavo Man-eaters, are but a pinch of the experience. Perhaps the least spoken about setback is the most outstanding – the Africans refusal to work on the project. It is an open historical fact that the project designers had underestimated the cost of the work. At the end of the 1,000 km rail project, it had cost 5 million pounds. In 1894, the estimates had been 3 million pounds.
