How to Work From Home

When my adorable baby reached six months of age, like many new mums I found myself facing a tough decision: do I go back to work? Busy desk in the city, or my daughter’s first steps? The latter, of course! Yet with only one salary coming in, life could get unpleasant and as I was deliberating the answer hit me in the face: why don’t I work from home?

A great deal of opportunities can be found on the web these days – from addressing envelopes to writing articles and self employed sales posts. Possibilities seem endless but you may ask: is it for me? Is it for real or is it a mere scam? Will I make enough to pay the bills?

Working from home suits some and doesn’t suit others, but as long as you are fairly organised, reasonably industrious, determined and self disciplined, the world of home working can be yours! So let’s see, how can you make money working at your own pace?

Go Freelance!

Many jobs can be done on a freelance basis – whether you are a translator, web designer, journalist or a hairdresser, working for yourself is worth pursuing. It may seem daunting at first but preparation is the key. A healthy dose of courage and a thick skin will prove helpful as well, especially when bidding for work. If you are not already well established in the market, you will need to advertise on the internet and in the local papers as well as cold calling potential clients. Also, a presence on the social networking sites such as www.facebook.com, www.twitter.com, www.linkedin.com and websites for freelancers, for instance www.peopleperhour.com, can be beneficial.

Become a writer!

You don’t have to write novels to make a living out of writing. Writing short informative articles for the web is one way to make money online. There are plenty of websites which will publish your articles and share the revenue they generate out of advertising, such as Suite 101. It may well take some time for your income to grow, but you are earning lifetime royalties. And if you feel confident, why not approach your favourite magazine with an interesting article or idea? Many glossy magazines buy articles (and photographs) from freelancers as they are always on the search for the new and the original!

Home Shoring

Home shoring is like working for a call centre but you are actually based at home and choose your own hours of work. The calls are routed to your home number, so all you need is a landline and a reliable internet connection. It is easy to start, but make sure you choose a reputable business. Unfortunately there are many home shoring companies that charge a start-up fee. The following companies employ home shorers: www.futuretravelrecruitment.co.uk, www.hols4u.net, www.bt.com, www.theaa.com.
